Abstract
Raytracing and air mass calculation are the fundamentals for the direct and inverse solution of the atmospheric radiative transfer. For limb viewing instruments refraction is a major concern at least in the case of low tangent altitudes. This paper presents a method for raytracing and airmass calculations which is applicable to an ellipsoidal earth shape. This is in particular important for the MIPAS-ENVISAT instrument [1], because ENVISAT will be a polar orbiter, and MIPAS is planned to be a rear-scanning instrument, such that a single line of sight will cover a wide latitude variation.
