Abstract

Cool Earth Solar is designing a utility-scale concentrated solar photovoltaic generating system using inflated reflective polyester teraphthalate film as the primary concentrator to achieve the combined objectives of low installed cost per watt and low cost per kWh. The shape of the film is a consequence of the properties of the film and the inflation pressure. The optical properties of the film are characterized and an appropriate receiver designed. The receiver is a monolithic multiple-channel design incorporating a compound secondary concentrator and a mosaic of solar cells chosen to best exploit the properties of the primary. The primary concentrator is profiled using a specially designed test set-up and software. The secondary-optic design is optimized using commercial non-sequential ray-tracing software with multi-variable optimization. The secondary optic design dictates the layout of the solar cell mosaic.
