Abstract
Near-field thermal radiation with its variety of applications in different fields such as energy harvesting and radiative cooling could be crucial in the development of new generation of devices. In this work, we study the near to far-field thermal emission of a thin SiC film supporting surface phonon polaritons. The same thin film is also considered when nano-spheres are placed upon its surface and we compare the results against those obtained using the effective medium theory (EMT). We observed that there is significant enhancement of emission when nanoparticles are placed on the surface with certain periodicities, particularly at the far field, which shows potential use of these structures for radiative cooling applications. We conclude that accuracy of the results is questionable when EMT is used for the case of surfaces with nanostructures.
