A Mach-Zehnder modulator fabricated with a polymer having improved high temperature characteristics

Abstract

Electro-optic (EO) polymers with high temperature characteristics are required for use in typical systems. During assembly and packaging operations, devices must be able to survive assembly temperatures around 250 C for short excursions, and in system applications they can be subjected to temperatures of 100 °C (125 °C for military) for long periods of time1. The current generation of EO polymers with glass transition temperatures below 200 °C can be used in special applications, but they are inadequate for ordinary system use. An EO polymer with improved temperature characteristics was developed and Mach-Zehnder modulators were fabricated on Si wafers using this material.
