Abstract
The discovery of a system based on silver halide crystallites suspended in an inorganic glass matrix resulted in the development of the first commercially acceptable photochromic lenses1,2. The convenience of having lenses that darken automatically upon exposure to sunlight has proven to be appealing to eyeglass wearers. An estimated 10 million pairs of silver-based photochromic prescription lenses were dispensed in the United States in 19893.
