Abstract

Although it has long been accepted (Campbell and Green, 1965) that optical degradation contributed to the limitation of performance in central vision, opinion has been divided on its effects in the periphery (Charman, 1983). At first acquaintance this seems surprising because beyond 30 degrees from the point of fixation substantial amounts of oblique astigmatism are known to occur (Ferry, Rand, and Hardy, 1931; Millodot and Lamont, 1974) and lateral chromatic aberration has been considered to be a major contributor.
