Monochromatic Aberrations in Accommodated Eyes

Abstract

Aberrations of an optical system are a function of the conjugate position of the object and image planes. An added factor in considering aberrations as a function of accommodation in the human eye is the changing shape and gradient refractive index of the lens. Present schematic eye models cannot accurately predict aberrations in the human eye1. Some with aspheric surfaces or gradients2 succeed in predicting average spherical aberration on axis for the unaccommodated or fully accommodated states but none predicts the changes for intermediate states or the frequent presence of coma in the eye1.
