Abstract

The two-stroke-cycle engine has recently attracted renewed interest as a potential passenger-car powerplant because of its high specific power output. The performance and emissions of these engines have long been recognized to depend critically on scavenging, the gas-exchange process which removes combustion products from the cylinder and brings in fresh air. Nevertheless, comparatively little quantitative experimental information on the scavenging flow fields in practical two-stroke engines is available.
