Abstract
The availability of single transverse mode semiconductor laser diodes with power output in the tens of milliwatts combined with miniature optics and high sensitivity integrated detector modules releases the instrumentation designer from the constraints of the optical bench, and allows the creation of elegant, compact optical assemblies with a level of performance equal to and often better than the best gas lasers and photomultiplier assemblies.
