Abstract

The performance of two volume holographic media, LiNbO3:Fe and Bi2TeO5 were analyzed. The crystals growth was optimized for memory applications. The photorefractive diffraction efficiency and its decay were followed in the dark and during erasure. Analog volume holograms were recorded, and their quality and volatility were analyzed. The characteristics of the holograms were also followed by the evolution of the bit-error rate in the page-oriented digital recording. At present stage, the crystal quality and the photorefractive sensitivity of LiNbO3:Fe was the best, but the durability of the hologram in the dark and during read-out, without fixing, looked a unique property of Bi2TeO5.
