Abstract
A procedure is developed to obtain analytic expressions for the switching irradiances characterizing the bistable and the multistable behaviour of a non linear Fabry-Perot, filled with a lossless, Kerr-type medium. Based on approximating the Airy-curve with a parabola near the commutation points, this procedure brings forward a set of analytic expressions allowing for a fast and easy determination of both up- and downswitching irradiances. These expressions are derived and the results are highlighted because of their accuracy, conciseness and ease of applicability. Finally a few practical examples are shown and some applications are discussed.
