Optical Trapping of Nanoparticles: New Opportunities in Nanoscale Sensors

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Combining nanotechnology with optical trapping offers new possibilities for developing photonic force probes and nanoscale sensors with engineered functionality that target specific types of physical, biological and chemical interactions. In addition, nanoparticles provide interaction volumes that are many times smaller than their microscopic counterparts, thereby potentially creating much higher resolutions for sensing in a variety of confined complex environments.
