Photonic Band Structure of Dispersive Metamaterials Formulated as a Hermitian Eigenvalue Problem

Abstract

We formulate the photonic band structure calculation of any lossless dispersive metamaterial as a Hermitian eigenvalue problem. We further show that the orthonormal basis formed by the lossless eigenmodes rigorously models lossy dispersive systems.
