Abstract
Photorefractive crystals have been used for long to improve the characteristics of laser beams: their shapes, their longitudinal and transverse modal structures. In this communication we review the state of the art of the use of intra-cavity photorefractive self-adapted filters. In this approach, the main role of the adaptive photorefractive filter is to select the oscillating modes among the possible modes of the laser cavity without such a filter. We detail their specificities, and various filters and laser architectures to improve the spatial and longitudinal modal structures.
