Abstract

We present analysis of different modes of packet transport and switching, namely synchronous, asynchronous, fixed length, variable length, based on the granularities of the packet arrivals, packet lengths and the fiber delay line buffer. We argue that IP-centric or variable packet length mode is best suited mode for optical IP transport.
