Abstract
High power diode lasers are well known for their high efficiency and small size. Based on the technology in which high power is reached by incoherent coupling of several individual laser sources with rather low power, high power diode lasers show a limited beam quality on one hand, but a high flexibility on the other. Consequently improvement of beam quality and the modular use in special application adapted systems have been investigated intensively in the German national research project "Modular Diode Laser Systems". This article reports about the motivation, organisation and the results of this project, which has ended with the end of year 2003.
