Heisenberg-limited reference frames using spin-squeezed atomic ensembles

Abstract

We present an experimentally-accessible scheme to perform Heisenberg-limited alignment of a Cartesian frame using spin-squeezed atomic ensembles. This scheme involves using three distinct ensembles of spins, each polarized in one of three Cartesian directions and subsequently spin-squeezed along an orthogonal direction. Unlike previous theoretical investigations, our scheme does not require highly-entangled states of many distinguishable spins, and can make use of adaptive measurements to achieve the Heisenberg limit.
