Abstract
Solutions to the nonlinear Schrodinger (MS) equation which describe the propagation of optical waves in nonlinear dispersive media possess a behavior called modulation instability in the region of uniform wave propagation. Polarization instability1 also exists for the coupled NIS equations that describe the motion of elliptically polarized waves. Stable motion occurs for circular and linear polarizations, but small perturbation toward ellipticity for either of these polarizations leads to instability.2
