Abstract
This paper demonstrates that the size of small metal particles can be manipulated in a well-defined way with laser light. Even a considerable narrowing of a given size distribution on a surface can be achieved. This becomes possible by a laser sputtering or ablation process, which can be controlled so that particles in a certain size range shrink selectively as a result of an ongoing removal of atoms from their surfaces.
