The last decade has seen a large growth in nonlinear optical (NLO) studies of organic materials. For molecular systems with large third-order optical susceptibilities χ3, the focus has been on polymers with delocalized x electrons.1 For conjugated linear chains such as polyenes, recent theoretical calculations suggest that χ3 should increase approximately as the fifth power of the electron delocalization length.2 Other factors such as charge transfer effects are likely to have a significant effect on NLO activity.3
