Abstract
We have studied the Hanle effect both experimentally and theoretically for the case where the exciting light has a large range of Intensities and varying spectral width. A description of near- resonant light scattering from a beam of finite spectral width is usually based on the solution of the steady-state Liouville equation dp/dt = 0 of the atomic density matrix in the light field. Of course, the main problem is how to characterize the laser spectral width.
