Abstract
It has been shown that the dispersion compensated colliding pulse mode-locked (CPM) dye laser may support pulses reminiscent not only of N = 1 solitons1 but also of higher-order solitons.2 Very recently, it has been argued that despite several striking similarities with solitons in fibers, these periodic pulses are not true solitons, because, in addition to self-phase modulation (SPM) in the Jets and group velocity dispersion (GVD) provided by the prism sequence, saturable gain and saturable loss can also act as strong pulse shaping mechanisms.3 In addition, the discrete nature of the elements in the cavity would make the soliton analogy inappropriate.
