Abstract

Recently much attention, theoretical and experimental, has focused on the study of one or a few atoms interacting with the modes of a resonator. Experimental observations of changes in the atoms’ spontaneous emission rates in the microwave as well as optical regions have been reported.1 Additionally, atomic line center frequency shifts induced by the presence of the cavity have also been observed. These effects have been attributed to cavity-induced changes in the density of modes of the surrounding vacuum.2
