Abstract

Strong self-phase-modulation (SPM) in single-mode optical fibers can be utilized for efficient mode-locking of solid state lasers. Stable femtosecond pulse generation in these systems calls for (1) passive amplitude modulation and (2) balancing SPM and group-velocity dispersion (GVD) in the laser cavity. We present two distinctly different developments complying with these requirements and report on experimental results obtained with Nd:glass lasers.
