Abstract
The tropyl radical has been prepared in a flow reactor [hydrogen abstraction from cyeloheptatriene (c-C7H8) by F or Cl] The spectra have been observed by resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI). The spectra are much stronger than, and distinct from, the spectra of the isomeric benzyl radical (C6-H5CH2), which was prepared in a similar manner. Spectra of these isomeric radicals will be useful for studying the combustion of aromatic hydrocarbons.
