Abstract

Inelastic light scattering in magnetic fields to B=30 tesla and temperatures down to T=0.1 K have recently become practical through the use of optical fibers.1 This has given us the opportunity to optically study the regime of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect and the electron solid in two-dimensional electron systems. In general terms, the effect of the high magnetic field is to confine the kinetic energy of electrons to localized cyclotron orbits. Then, with the additional constraint of low temperatures the electrons are allowed to interact collectively.
