Vibrational dynamics through infrared laser spectroscopy

Abstract

Near-infrared laser spectroscopy in mlecular beams has been extremely useful in the study of the vibrational predissociation dynamics of weakly bound molecular complexes. To dale, most of this dynamical information has come from the predissociation lifetimes determined from homogeneous broadening observed in the spectrum. In most cases the lifetimes are sufficiently long to enable us to pump individual quantum states of the parent complex with a high-resolution cw infrared laser. In the experiments discussed here, an F-center laser is used to pump a number of binary complexes to well- defined initial states. The final-state distributions of the resulting monomer photofragments are then determined by measuring the associated angular distributions.
