Abstract

Previously we reported the first example of a strong and sensitive wavelength dependence on the ignition properties of premixed gases.1-5 We demonstrated that there is a sharp wavelength dependence on the amount of laser energy necessary to ignite a premixed flow of H2/O2 at atmospheric pressure. The wavelength dependence exhibits a spectral profile that is similar to the two-photon fluorescence excitation spectrum of flame oxygen atoms, and the respective peaks correspond to exactly the same wavelength near 225.6 nm. We showed that the resonant formation of a laser-produced microplasma was important in the efficient (−0.5-mJ) ignition of these premixed gases.
