Abstract
The simultaneous excitation of two levels by a short and coherent light pulse leads to an interference of the polarization with a frequency υ= ΔE/h, where ΔE is the energy splitting of the states. These so-called quantum beats have been reported recently for quantum well structures1,2 and other semiconductors.3
