Third-order linear absorption by pairs of molecules

Abstract

Absorption of electromagnetic (EM) radiation by gases, under conditions of normal pressure and temperature, is usually regarded as an old and well-understood subject. Although this is undoubtedly true in regions near strong absorption lines, it is not so in the remaining regions of the spectrum, usually referred to as "window" regions. Theoretical understanding of the absorption mechanism in these regions is an important and complex problem.
