Abstract

This talk reviews recent advances in the development of visible solid-state laser devices based on the use of nonlinear optical processes for frequency upconversion of near-ir pump sources. Two fundamentally different upconversion phenomena have been utilized. Efficient frequency doubling of GaAlAs diode lasers can be achieved by coupling their output radiation to monolithic resonators fabricated of nonlinear crystals. By use of this approach, more than 50 mW of 428-nm radiation have been generated with a conversion efficiency of 12% from electrical input to the injection laser to blue output.
