Abstract
We describe the stationary waveguiding properties of TE guided waves in a slab optical waveguide with a nonlinear Kerr-like bounding medium in a compact way. We use the normalized effective modal index (b) and a set of four independent normalized parameters: normalized thickness (V), asymmetry measure (a) of the waveguide, the generalized aspect ratio between film and substrate refractive indices (δn), and a new guided power measure (es). From an analysis starting on Buckingham's II theorem, we investigate the similarity rules existing between the above waveguiding structures. Both self-focusing and self-defocusing bounding media are considered.
