The primary photoisomerization in vision occurs in femtoseconds

Abstract

Rhodopsin is an intrinsic membrane protein that is found in retinal rod cells. Light absorption by rhodopsin's 11-cis retinal chromophore drives a cis-to-trans isomerization that initiates visual excitation. Understanding the molecular dynamics of this important reactions is a fundamental problem in photochemistry. In particular, the time required for this primary photochemical isomerization has never been resolved.
