Quantum propagation in singlemode fiber

Abstract

Light propagating in single-mode fiber is subject to linear loss (LL) and group-velocity dispersion (GVD). If the beam is sufficiently intense, Kerr-effect-induced self-phase modulation (SPM) will also be significant. Several groups have shown that a quantum treatment of SPM, in the absence of LL and GVD, must include a finite Kerr-effect response time τR in order to correctly reproduce the classical limit.1–3 In this paper we report a quanmm-propagation formulation that includes LL, GVD, and finite response-time SPM.
