Abstract
The effects of varying the length of an external cavity strongly coupled to a very short, dye laser have been studied. A rhodamine 6G dye laser with a nominal length of 100 µm and a refractive index of 1.39 operates at 0.59µm wavelength when strongly coupled to a 2.5-cm external cavity with an intercavity transmission of T> 0.99.1 The external mirror of the external cavity-serves as an output coupler with R~ 0.90 Typically, three to five modes lase in steady state, with a frequency separation of-1.1 THz. We have observed large changes in the total intensity and frequency shifts of one of the lasing modes.
