Abstract

Metastable xenon is an ideal system for laser cooling, with properties very similar to those of cesium. It possesses a promising two-photon transition for a laser-cooled optical frequency standard.1 It undergoes Penning ionization, permitting detailed studies of ultracold collisions. In addition, xenon has bosonic (even) and fermionic (odd) isotopes, which may permit observation of quantum statistical effects.
