Abstract

Stimulated Raman transitions have been used to create a new class of atom interferometers. When used on laser-cooled atoms in an atomic fountain, our first interferometer measured the acceleration of an atom due to gravity with a resolution of Δg/g ≤ 3 × 10−8.1 By going to cesium atoms and improved vibration isolation, we will try to improve the resolution of this measurement by another 3 orders of magnitude.
