Abstract

C60 has attracted considerable interest as a potential new material for electronic and nonlinear optical applications.1 Solid C60 exhibits complex relaxation dynamics following photoexcitation. Unusual aspects of the ultrafast dynamics of solid C60 are their nonexponential behavior and their strong dependence on excitation density. The nonexponential decay dynamics have been observed by a number of groups2-6 and have led to a great deal of speculation as to the nature of the relaxation processes in solid C60. A number of processes have been proposed, including carrier relaxation processes, lattice relaxation, and molecular interactions. The work presented in this paper includes recent experimental results and analysis that provide the first definitive interpretation of the nonexponential dynamics in solid C60.
