Abstract
We are studying collisions between ultracold rubidium atoms1 held in a diodelaser trap. This magneto-optical trap2 is loaded from a laser-cooled atomic beam and typically confines 105 atoms at densities of 10“ cm−3 and temperatures of 100 µK. Inelastic collisions that lead to ejection from the trap are measured by calibrating the density-dependent decay rate of atoms from the trap.3
