Abstract

Owing to their high degree of alignment, thin layers of nematic and ferroelectric liquid. crystals (LC's) sandwiched between two glass slides have recently attracted great interest as practical nonlinear device concepts, Second-harmonic (SH) generation has been used to unravel the mechanism of LC alignment,1 In particular, addition of nonlinear liquid-crystalline siloxane dyes as guest resulted in high second-order nonlinearities upon application of a longitudinal electric field.2
