Abstract
Many electro-optic and nonlinear optical devices require the development of lossless optical materials with large nonlinear optical susceptibilities. One standard approach to the development of such materials is to synthesize materials that possess a large nonlinear optical response at the molecular level. Conjugated polymeric nonlinear optical materials, such as the polydiacetylenes, provide a clear example of the successful implementation of such an approach.
