Dynamics and stability of phase locking in a two-element laser array

Abstract

The steady-state and transient dynamics of phase locking in a two-element Nd:YAG laser array have been studied as a test of the coupled-oscillator model1-3 for laser arrays. By creating two evanescent-coupled lasers in a Nd:YAG étalon by using diodeend pumping, the coupling strength between the elements in the array can be continuously varied by adjusting the positions of the pumping beams. This permits the observation of the phase-locking process over a wide range of coupling strengths. A schematic diagram of the laser array is shown in Fig. 1.
