Abstract

Investigating delayed light emission and continued oxygen release, two phenomena that occur long after illumination in a photosynthetic system, is important for understanding the primary photosynthetic process. It is well known that a large amount of the chlorophylls in chloroplasts are in aggregate. We have investigated delayed light emission from aggregated chlorophylls. By means of time-resolved spectroscopy, a nonemissive energy-storage state in aggregated chlorophylls has been discovered for what we believe to be the first time. The results, which reveal the physical mechanism of delayed light emission, can be used to explain the continued oxygen release in photosynthetic systems.
