Abstract
The investigation of electron dynamics near the Fermi level of metals by using ultra-short optical pulses permits study of the thermalization of a hot-electron distribution to the lattice temperature. Previous pump-probe experiments, performed on Cu (Refs. 1 and 2) or on Au (Ref. 3) thin films close to the interband transitions form the d band to the Fermi level (d→EF) have revealed intensity-dependent relaxation times varying between a few hundreds of femtoseconds to a few picoseconds.
