Abstract
Amplitude squeezed light is characterized by a steady photon stream that, over certain time intervals, exhibits fluctuations in the photon population that are below the standard quantum limit (SQL, variance equal to the mean photon number). This non- classical light may satisfy the number-phase minimum uncertainty relation if the optical phase noise is sufficiently low. The benefits of squeezed light in genera] are both practical, associated with the reduction in laser noise, and fundamental, due to the non- classical features.
