Abstract
On a semiclassical level, the dynamics of carriers generated by a short laser pulse in a semiconductor is described by the Boltzmann equation (BE). The carrier generation rate derived from Fermi's golden rule is proportional to the laser intensity with a spectral shape given by the laser spectrum. This approach, however, neglects all effects related to the coherence of the laser, as have been observed, e.g., in four-wave-mixing experiments.
