Abstract
Precise measurements of Stark shifts have permitted new stringent tests of atomic theory.1-3 These measurements have produced much more accurate data than have been obtained in experiments that determine radiative lifetimes, polarizabilities, or oscillator strengths. This work reports the measurement of the Stark shift of the (6s)2 1So → (6s6p) 1P1 transition in barium. The final result has an uncertainty that is less than one-tenth that of the most accurate value found in the literature.
