Abstract

In this paper we present coherent nonlinear opticaJ studies of a composite exciton - cavity system. By observing coherent oscillations in spectrally resolved transient four-wave mixing (FWM), we show, for the first time to our knowledge, the excitation of a coherent superposition of the two normal modes of the composite system, and we demonstrate directly in the time domain the coherent energy exchange between the excitan and the cavity.1 Deep coherent oscillations with a period that varies with the normal-mode splitting persist even when detuning between the cavity and the excitan is much greater than the exciton-cavity coupling rate.
