Abstract

In the spectral region from the UV to the near infrared, the processes of multiphoton ionization and dissociation of H2 (D2) have been thoroughly studied and are well understood.1 The situation is quite different in the mid-infrared spectral range. Experiments were performed to study the behavior of H2 and D2 in the presence of an intense 10.6-μm (CO2) laser field. Both molecular and atomic ions were observed, with the latter possessing some initial value of kinetic energy. Ion yields and kinetic-energy dependences as functions of the laser intensity were measured.
