Electromagnetically induced transparency in semiconductor quantum wells

Abstract

Because electromagnetically induced transparency1,2 has been observed in atomic systems, analogous semiconductor-quantum-well configurations have been introduced.3,4 Following our modulated reflectivity result for undoped multiple quantum wells in an asymmetric Fabry-Perot cavity,5 we report reduced absorption by moderate intersubband coupling (10 kW/cm2) at room temperature for what we believe to be the first time. This is direct evidence of the pure optical Stark effect, not electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) as defined in Ref. 2.
